Methodology
How the Ranking works
The Ranking follows a transparent self-assessment process supported by documentary evidence. Each university completes a submission across five elements -- scored, banded, and recognized on a single comparable scale.
Evaluation Framework
Five elements, one holistic measure
Universities are assessed through a nature-aligned lens — Earth, Water, Air, Energy, and Space — each mapped to institutional action and relevant UN Sustainable Development Goals. Leadership in even a single element can earn global recognition.

Earth
Sustainable land use, biodiversity restoration, waste-to-resource transformation

Scoring Rubric
Every indicator, scored 0-5
Each of the 50 indicators is self-assessed against the same six-stage maturity scale, so scores stay comparable across every element and every institution.
Not Initiated
No formal policy, program, or action in place yet.
Planning Stage
Intent is documented; strategy or policy is being drafted.
Development Stage
Early pilots or systems are being built out.
Implementation Stage
Actively running, with visible activity across campus.
Institutionalized
Embedded in policy, budget, and governance -- not dependent on one team.
Exemplary & Scalable
A model practice, mature enough for other institutions to replicate.
Performance Bands
From aggregate score to global recognition
Institutions are recognized globally based on their aggregate score out of 250 points, reflecting their commitment to a sustainable future.
